I‘m ashamed to admit that I had never heard of the Faroe Islands until I came to live in Denmark. The islands are a legacy of the Danish empire lying between Scotland and Iceland and home to about 50,000 people. I would have imagined that it might be a challenge to produce a regular podcast about the Islands but such a beast does exist and has just won the Danish non-profit category in the European Podcast Awards. For example the Islands experienced their first murder in 25 years last year and reaction to that was caught on the podcast. The Faroe Islands Podcast is in English and covers all manner of topics and makes you want to visit. There is also lots about the lighter side of life on the Islands such as the comedy scene in the latest show. An interesting runner up in that category for Denmark was a podcast called Third Ear which was wonderfully innovative and well produced, a mix of fly on the wall documentary and art. Sadly it’s not still running although the archive (mostly in Danish) is still available.
The EPA competition shows what a varied scene the podcast world is with entrants varying from one minute podcasts to hour and a half recordings of meetings or talks, from raw unedited emotions to highly polished artful productions. In fact it is almost impossible to compare one with another. See the whole award ceremony for all categories and all countries here on YouTube.
